Movies That Celebrate Unlikely Friendships

Friendships can come in all sorts, grow from the strangest places and when you least expected.

From aliens, to a volleyball to royalty and more, some are the weirdest opposites, but they attract, and form a special bond that tugs at the heartstrings. We highlight some of the most notable movies that celebrate extraordinary friendships.

Which is your favourite?

ET AND ELLIOT IN E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL

Undeniably one of the most memorable movies that has ever hit the big screens, transcending through generations of viewers, who can forget the unthinkable friendship between an extra terrestrial and a little boy? So moving, all we wanted to do at the end of the movie was to phone home to express our love for the people who care.

Communication is key to any relationship you say, but E.T. and Elliott formed a deep bond through cautious contact, learning to understand each other with minimal dialogue, as well as appreciate each others’ vast differences, which in our opinion, is out of this world.

CARL & RUSSEL IN UP

This has us reaching for the tissues. One of the cutest and most heart-warming animated movie about the friendship between a grumpy elderly widow, Carl and young wilderness explorer Russell.

Carl was bitter after the death of his beloved wife, withdraw and hostile towards little curious explorer Russell. He mistakenly took Russell along on an adventure to South America. Stuck, the two came to appreciate each other, and form a love so close as if they were a family unto themselves.

CHUCK AND WILSON THE VOLLEYBALL IN CAST AWAY

Dare we say this is one of the most unusual of unusual friendships?

After his plane crashes into the South Pacific, FedEx employee Chuck was stranded on an uninhabited island. Trapped, alone, desperate and fighting for survival, Chuck strikes an unlikely friendship with a volleyball he named Wilson which helps him through his darkest hours and teaches him to never give up.

Never think you can feel this much emotion due to a volleyball can you?

BEN AND JULES IN THE INTERN

Age is not a barrier. Besides age, the movie also cleverly touches on issues like platonic friendships and gender roles.

Anne Hathaway plays a young, successful and confident boss of an online fashion store who strikes an endearing friendship with Robert De Niro who plays a retiree who joins her company as an intern.

Despite the age difference, the two bonded when they realise there’s much they can learn from each other.

Unlike the other friendships highlighted in this article, this in particular is current, and close to heart.

VICTORIA AND ABDUL

She’s the respected queen, and he’s the humble servant.

Opening 9 November, this upcoming British-American biographical drama film tells the extraordinary true story of the special friendship between Queen Victoria and her young Indian servant, forged in the later years of Queen Victoria’s remarkable rule.

The movie shoes how the friendship blooms and how this young servant goes on to become a powerful figure in court, while teaching the queen to write in Urdu and tutors her on Indian affairs.
